Hand surgery encompasses a range of surgical treatments used to restore the function and appearance of the hand. Hand injuries, degenerative disorders, and birth defects of the hand can affect the way patients live their lives. With quality medical care, hand surgery can improve quality of life and in many cases allow patients a full pain free recovery.

The hand involves the intricate skeletal and soft tissue anatomy of the wrist, palm, and fingers. As the most flexible part of the human skeleton, the hand enables us to perform many of our daily activities. Hand surgery can be used to address issues at the level of both skeletal, bone and joint issues, and soft tissue, ligament, tendon, and nerve issues.

Trigger finger release

Trigger finger is a condition that affects the tendons of the fingers. These tendons function by gliding freely through tight tunnels in the hand. Trigger finger occurs when the tunnel thickens and restricts movement of the tendon. In these cases, a trigger finger release can be performed.

At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre, we have board-certified plastic surgeons with many years of experience in hand surgery. Patients feel safe and comfortable knowing they are being treated in an accredited surgical facility. Reduced wait times for state-of-the-art technology allows patients to seek faster treatment and recovery

After Trigger finger release surgery patients are happy to see quick results. Range of motion and function are restored in the finger.

Symptoms of Trigger Finger include:

  • Snapping or popping sensation when moving the finger(s) or thumb.
  • Soreness at the base of the finger or thumb in the palm, especially while gripping or grasping.
  • Pain and stiffness when bending the finger(s) or thumb.
  • Swelling or tender lump in the palm of the hand.
  • Locking of the finger(s) or thumb in the bent position (in severe cases). The finger(s) or thumb must be gently straightened with the help of the other hand.
  • Inability to fully flex the finger.

Extensor Compartment Tendon Sheath Release (De Quervain's Tenosynovitis)

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis affects the tendons in your wrist. This condition occurs when swelling of nearby structures causes the sheath of the wrist tendons to become inflamed. An Extensor Compartment Tendon Sheath Release can be performed to relieve symptoms.

At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre patients benefit from experienced board-certified plastic surgeons that can provide safe and effective results. Our surgeons understand the importance of your hand surgery. Therefore, only the most advanced techniques and technologies are used.

Extensor Compartment Tendon Sheath Release is a safe way to relieve feelings of pain and numbness. After surgery patients move their wrist without pain.

Symptoms of De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis include:

  • Swelling near the base of the thumb
  • Numbness along the back of your thumb and index finger
  • Interrupted movement with motion of the thumb (clicking, snapping)
  • Week grip

Tumor Excision

The word tumor encompasses a wide range of lumps and bumps. In most cases, tumours of the hand and wrist are not cancerous, but rather caused by excess synovial fluid and fatty tissue. In some cases, patients are not bothered by the tumor and do not need surgical intervention. Proper diagnosis, however, should still be made. In cases where the tumor causes pain and discomfort, a tumor excision can be made.

At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre patients benefit from knowledgeable experts that can properly diagnose and excise tumors on the hand and wrist. This procedure can be performed relatively quickly in our accredited surgical facility.

After surgery, patients can return home the same day. Patients find they are relieved of pain and discomfort within a few days of surgery.

Symptoms of a tumour include:

  • Lump or bump around the hand or wrist
  • Lump may move under the skin
  • Pain surrounding the lump that may prevent you from performing daily activities

Dupuytren’s fasciectomy

Dupuytren’s contracture is a disease caused by contracted scar-like tissue. The tissue forms just beneath the skin of your fingers and palm and forces one or more fingers to curl into the palm. A Dupuytren’s fasciectomy can be performed to release fingers from the bent position.

At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre, we offer safe and effective surgeries by board certified plastic surgeons. Patients benefit from short wait times and life changing results. We can perform digital artery/nerve repair to help restore function and relieve symptoms of damage.

Surgery results in almost an immediate increase in range of motion. After a complete recovery, patients gain better use of their hand, and their quality of life is improved.

Symptoms of Dupuytren’s contracture may include:

  • Not being able to lay your hand flat on a table, palm down
  • Small nodules in the palm.
  • Sore grooves in the skin of the palm
  • Fingers are pulled forward
  • Your hand is not able to function as effectively
