As the largest organ of the body, the skin is very complex and serves to protect the body. It covers the entire body and protects the internal organs from potentially hazardous factors such as heat, light, injury, and infection. The skin is responsible for helping regulate body temperature, storing water and fat, and making vitamin D.

The health of our skin can indicate our overall health and well-being.

Irregularities in the skin can be among the first visual symptoms we notice when there are issues within the body. The skin itself can be the source of illness, infection, or irregularities. When issues arise, it is extremely important to have a health care professional assess and properly treat the area of concern. In the case of lesions, potential skin cancers, and lacerations, skin surgery may be used to restore the skin back to a healthy, functional state.

Skin Lesion Excision (Xanthelasma, keratosis, epidermal cyst, nevus)

A skin lesion is an abnormal lump, bump or area on the skin that can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous). It can occur on the face, as well as any other part of the body. Many patients seek excision (removal) of these lesions for cosmetic reasons. Your surgeon may also recommend removal of the skin lesion as a treatment or for diagnostic purposes.

At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre our board-certified plastic surgeons will assess and properly diagnose the lesion. Whether for cosmetic or diagnostic reasons, patients benefit from short wait times and surgeons who can properly care for their skin.

With extensive efforts to preserve the appearance of your skin, a lesion can be removed with very little scaring during a quick, relatively easy surgery performed under local anesthesia. Patients typically return home the same day relieved of any pressure, pain, or discomfort the lesion may have been causing them.

Symptoms of skin lesions may include:

  • Discolored skin patches (abnormal pigmentation)
  • Raised bumps that are red or white
  • Open sores, lesions or ulcers
  • Peeling skin
  • Rashes, possibly with itchiness or pain
  • Bleeding
  • Scaly or rough skin

Basal/Squamous Cell Cancer excision

Basal and Squamous cell cancer lesions are forms of non-melanoma skin cancers. These cancers occur when skin cells are damaged, for example, by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Some of these lesions may grow quite quickly, while in other cases may not. In either case, it is important to have them properly diagnosed and excised (removed).

At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre our board-certified plastic surgeons will properly diagnose and excise Basal/Squamish cell cancers. Our surgeons have many years of experience treating skin lesions and will make their best efforts to preserve the surrounding healthy skin with as little scaring as possible.

Surgery is the most common treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers. The cancerous area is typically excised under local anaesthesia. In more advanced cases, some of the surrounding tissue may also be removed to ensure all cancerous cells have been excised.

Symptoms of Basal Cell Cancer May include:

  • A pearly lump
  • A scaly, dry area that is shiny and pale or bright pink in colour

Symptoms of Squamish cell cancer may include:

  • Thickened red, scaly spot
  • Rapidly growing lump
  • Sore that has not healed
  • Tender to touch

Melanoma Excision

Melanoma is a type of cancer that starts in pigment cells (melanocytes). The cells that produce the colour of your skin. Non-cancerous growth of melanocytes presents as moles and freckles. The cancerous growth of melanocytes results in melanomas, which is a mass of cancerous cells. If found early, melanomas can be treated with surgical excision.

At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre our board-certified plastic surgeons will assess your area of concern and take proper diagnostic measures. Our surgeons have many years of experience treating skin cancers. Quick appointment times allow patients to be seen almost immediately. This is important in the case of melanoma, as waiting too long can results in further development of the cancer.
During a melanoma excision, your surgeon will remove the area of concern as well as surrounding healthy tissue. This helps ensure the cancer will not reoccur. Surgeons at TOP Plastic Surgery Centre will make their best efforts to preserve the surrounding healthy skin with as little scaring as possible.

One of the first symptoms of Melanoma may include change in an existing mole:

  • Change in colour, shades, or a blotchy appearance
  • Mole that is getting bigger
  • A mole that has an irregular shape, increase in height, not symmetrical
  • Elevation of an area on the mole
  • Itching or bleeding mole
