Lipoma Removal
Lipomas are benign (non cancerous) lumps typically made of fatty tissue. Lipomas often appear as mobile, nontender lumps just under the skin. Patients may seek removal of these slow growing lumps for cosmetic or medical reasons. Though immediate removal is not always necessary, if the lipoma causes pain or discomfort removal is an option.
At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre our board-certified plastic surgeons will assess and properly diagnose the lesion. Whether for cosmetic or diagnostic reasons, patients benefit from short wait times and surgeons who can properly care for the skin and surrounding tissue.
During a lipoma removal the unwanted tissue will be excised. The lesion can be removed with very little scaring during a quick, relatively easy surgery performed under local anesthesia. Patients typically return home the same day relieved of any pressure, pain, or discomfort the lesion may have been causing them. Once healed, only a small scar may be present, and the appearance of the lump will be gone.
Common symptoms of a lipoma include a small lump or swelling that:
- Grows slowly under your skin
- Is soft and smooth
- Can be moved easily under your skin
- Ranges from 2–10 cm in diameter
- Is relatively painless
Ganglion cyst removal
Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps that most commonly develop along the tendons or joints of the wrists and hands. Ganglion cysts are non-cancerous, clear fluid or gelatinous filled lumps that typically remain harmless and disappear without any treatment. If the cyst becomes painful or interferes with movement of the joint, aspiration and/orremoval may be necessary.
At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre our board-certified plastic surgeons will assess the cyst and determine if removal is needed. Patients with ganglion cysts may be experiencing pain and lack of function in the affected structure. Our centre offers quick appointment times and the opportunity to seek fast treatment.
Symptoms of Ganglion Cyst include:
- A small lump or bump along a joint (typically hand or wrist)
- Pain
- Discomfort in the surrounding areas
- Restriction of movement of nearby joints.
Epidermal/sebaceous/pilar cysts
Pilar cysts form because of a chronic skin infection. These cysts develop near the tailbone and crease between the buttocks. Pilar cysts are filled with hair and skin debris and can become very swollen and bothersome for patients. Removal of these cysts can provide relief of pain and swelling.
At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre our board-certified plastic surgeons will assess the cyst and determine if removal is needed. Patients with these cysts may want removal as soon as possible. Our centre offers quick appointment times and the opportunity to seek fast treatment.
Patients are relieved of symptoms after the cyst has been excised, however, it is common for pilar cysts to recur. Patients are encouraged to continually remove hair in the area and keep the area as clean as possible to avoid cyst development.
Symptoms of Pilar Cysts include:
- Lump or bump near the tail bone or crease of the buttocks
- Pain
- Reddening of the skin
- Puss or blood drainage from an opening in the skin
- Foul smell
Mucous cyst Excision
A mucous cyst is a benign (non-cancerous) fluid filled cyst at the joint of the finger. It presents as swelling close to the bottom of the fingernail or back of the finger. Often these cysts occur because of arthritis in a nearby joint. Though sometimes they resolve spontaneously, excision of the cyst is necessary if ongoing pain, skin breakdown or unsightly appearance is affecting the patient.
At TOP Plastic Surgery Centre our board-certified plastic surgeons will assess the cyst and your related symptoms. If excision is required, our centre offers quick appointment times and the opportunity to seek fast treatment.
During your surgery the aim is to cut out the mucous cyst in entirety. Under local anesthesia, your surgeon will cut the surround skin and tissue to remove the cyst. Patients leave the office same day, and are able to drive and return to work within two weeks.
Symptoms of Mucous Cysts include:
- Raised swelling by the fingernail or back of the finger
- Lump that causes a groove or splitting in the nail
- Small fluid filled lump
- Rounded shape
- Tenderness
- Pearly or semi-clear surface or bluish in color
